Getting Started in Agility

So you think agility sounds like fun?  How do you get started?
Come Out and Watch a Show

Check our Trials page for the date of our next show and then come on out and watch.  If you've seen agility on TV, wait until you see it live.  The shows run all day from 8:00 am until around 4:00 pm.  Each show is scheduled a little differently so it's hard to predict when a certain dog will run but you are welcome to come out and stay as long as you'd like.  You'll notice the running order to the side of Trials page - This tells you what classes are running in what order and what height dogs will jump first.  If it says "Small to Tall" then the 8" dogs will start us off and we'll end each class with 24" or 26" dogs.  We usually have two rings running at the same time so there is almost always something to watch.

Bring a lawn chair if we are outside at JDFA.  There are bleachers at our other venues - Clay County and St. John's County fairgrounds.  There is usually a food vendor as well.

Show etiquette is very important.  This is competition time for the dogs and handlers.  And while we love an audience, everyone has paid entry fees and want to make sure their dog has the best run of the day.  Please don't distract the competitors or dogs that are near the ring.  Ask before petting or offering treats to any dog.  Maintaining focus is very important for the competition and some dogs are on special diets.  The atmosphere can seem quite casual at times but you never know when a dog might be headed into the ring to earn their next title!

Take a Class

Agility is a lot of fun but there is a lot to learn!  Taking a class from a good instructor can help you get started and help you and your dog work up to the highest levels of competition.  Check out our Local Classes list.

Join the Club

Join Pals & Paws.  Our membership page tells you how.  You'll get 24 hour, 7 day a week access to the club field with all the equipment you need to train.  We have fun matches where you can come out a run your dog without all the pressure of a real show.

Read Up

There is a lot of information available on the web.  Clean Run is a great agility magazine and their website contains a lot of information.  See our other Links too.  Yahoo Groups has many groups dedicated to discussing everything from breed specific agility and small dog agility to our very own Pals & Paws group.

Ask Questions

There is so much to learn about the sport of agility that you just can't learn it all from one place.  So take a class and ask questions, join the club and ask questions, get online and explore the agility websites or join an online group and ask questions.
